North Africa Trip

The team will work with ministry teams in a major city of Turkic people as well as experience ministry in a rural area.

  • People who want to understand the life of Turkic peoples better, particularly in seeing the challenges of church planting
  • People who want to roll up their shirt sleeves, get their hands dirty and get to know Turkic people well
  • People who want to rub shoulders with seasoned church planters
  • Serve as part of one or more churches in the capital city area, getting to know the workers, and church leaders and members
  • Share testimonies or special music at church
  • Work with some kind of community outreach, probably teaching English
  • Two days off to visit tourist sites in the capital city and its surroundings.
  • What it’s like to be immersed in Turkic language and culture (such as hearing the call to prayer 5 times a day)
  • The tension of living with security concerns
  • What it’s like to work closely with a national church
  • The challenges of working with a multinational team that may have limited expression in English
  • The joys and frustrations of cross-cultural relationships
  • How you respond to it all, a long way from home and well out of your comfort zone

The growth of Christianity in this nation has been slow; there are many prejudices against the Christian faith, both historically and culturally. As in much of the world, these people are caught up in trends towards modernization and moderation, contrasting with other elements who want to take a much more hard-line position with the majority religion. Hostility and persecution are on the rise

Chris and Linda Munford worked with Turkic peoples in Central Asia from 1995-2009. During this time they developed a drug and alcohol rehab ministry and planted a related church.

Chris and Linda will coach you through a comprehensive pre-trip preparation. A two-day team orientation will be held at WEC’s headquarters near Philadelphia. The team debrief will be held at a seaside resort in the country of ministry. Upon returning to Philadelphia the trip will be finished.

The orientation held at WEC’s USA headquarters includes:

  • Further explore Turkic culture, including some cultural do’s and don’ts
  • Learn some national language
  • Prepare for the church ministry
  • Participate in team-bonding exercises
  • Learn about the vision, strategies and members of the team

The debrief held at WEC's USA headquarters includes:

  • Completing a trip evaluation form
  • Working through the highs and lows of your trip during team discussion & prayer
  • Exploring the next steps after this powerful experience
  • Learning how to share your Discovery Teams experience with your church, family and friends
  • Discussing the challenges of re-entry and develop a plan for you next step in missions
