A Heart-breaking Funeral

From Jonathan, a worker in Africa

“Sadly, I have attended funerals of three students—very emotionally draining. One in particular, Monamu’s, was heart-breaking, as he literally died from an infection! He died on a dirty bed in a dirty hospital corridor. I traveled hours by public transport to his funeral. Monamu was taken to his father’s village and buried according to the tribal tradition. This was not in accordance with Monamu’s wishes, those of his immediate family, or with the Bible. The women wailed. The men took his body and invited the demons to enter it and tell them who caused his death so they could get revenge. Praise God, they said the demons would not speak—and I was able to say that he did not say anything as he died. I sat all day in the village with no food. Monamu’s mother, aunt and immediate family called me to sit with them, which was a great honor. It was a hard day with just one break in the middle. The pastor rose and spoke against the traditions that were going on. He called on a man to preach, which he did despite heckling. The young people then sang a song Monamu liked. I KNOW Monamu entered heaven with that song in his ears, I KNOW that it was no coincidence! I returned exhausted to spend the next days comforting the family who were divided by what had taken place and each needed a shoulder to cry on.”
