My wife and I have a good Muslim lady friend from the Middle East living in our area who is seriously ill with cancer. I was curious to know what Islam has to say to a Muslim who faces death. I called an Imam and asked him what I could read to our friend from the Qur’an that would give her peace, hope and assurance. First, the Imam told me that I must be sure our friend’s feet face Mecca. Then he suggested I read chapter 56 to her. After reading it myself, I was afraid to die, and read nothing in the passage that would give our good friend any hope, peace or assurance. This did not surprise me. I have found that the biblical meaning of these words are foreign ideas in the religion of Islam. We and our friends continue to pray for our ill friend’s health and salvation. During our visits we with her often read bible verses of hope, peace and assurance, which are foundational truths in Christianity. Our friend told my wife that she wishes she could have the peace and assurance we have in Christianity as she faces death as well as life.
